Coal generation may have a future in Australia’s energy grid, as prime minister Malcolm Turnbull would have us believe, but it may not be a long one.

Energy minister Josh Frydenberg has declared his full support for new Australian Energy Market Operator chief Audrey Zibelman, who is expected to play a leading role in Australia’s energy transition, but who has started to come under attack from coal-defending conservative commentators.

According to the China PV Industry Association (CPIA), China installed a total of 24.4GW of solar in the first-half of 2017, a new year-on-year record, 9% above last years record installation figures. 

General Electric, the industrial behemoth that remains the biggest provider of energy equipment in the world, predicts that some regions in Australia will soon get all their electricity from renewables – at least for a few days a year.
