On Friday Australian energy ministers agreed to an investigation into the country’s energy security, stability, and affordability to be led by Commonwealth Chief Scientist Alan Finkel. While any decisions as to how to ensure the stability of Australia’s electricity grid are unlikely to be made before then, large-scale electrical storage could very well have a significant role to play.

In the wake of devastating storms that blacked out the entire state, the Greens are pushing their proposed battery incentives as a way to boost energy security.

Energy experts are still scratching their heads about what they could have done to prevent the massive, state-wide blackout that occurred in the midst of a one-in-50-years storm last month. The answer may lay inside South Australian homes. Or at least, it should do. And it’s battery storage.

Last week, the switch was flicked on a joint energy storage project between BMW, Bosch and Vattenfall that utilises used EV battery packs.
